NAMES

All names of deceased family are of z'l, blessed memory.
Many of us are named in honor of our deceased ancestors, as is Ashkenazi minchag/tradition, custom.
Cousins, send in your names' stories.

Ever since Ellis Island and Phily immigration, our family names have been changed. Whether by order or choice, our names are our identity, Baruch Hashem, and not numbers. 

The ship manifests named us Ismuzik, and Balmazie, transliterated from Russian.
At the dock we became Mossman, and Bell.

I wish I knew what the Russian names looked like in Russian.

I have NO idea for whom I am named. I wish I knew. Also to my knowledge I have NO Hebrew nor Yiddish name from birth which saddens me.  My middle name starting with an "M" is the same as the middle name of my aunt Pauline Mossman Jolkovsky. Why? Who were we both named for, prior to my Family Tree genealogy records.
Ah, maybe we were named for Tanta Minnie, sister to Pearl Lander.

My rabbis gave me Hebrew names. 

My daughter, Aviva Leba Bell K., was named for my mother, Libby/Leba, z'l, (no middle name) whom Aviva never met. I added Bell to Aviva, for the matriarch's family name in my family, Ethel Bell, Aviva's greatgrandmother. They loved each other. It represents new life in America, as free Jews.

Libby Jolkovsky is named for Libby Mossman M.  who died almost 12 months earlier.

My aunt Perle Bell Mossman shared the lineage of a middle name. Perle also shares the name of her grandmother, Pearl, as did Perle's deceased sister, Pauline, z'l.

When Aviva Leba Bell K. and Brett Freedman have a baby, B'Shaah Tovah, I'm sure the first initial will be from her father's, z'l name, English or Hebrew, taken from a lineage of Eastern European names. We'll see... Brett has lost his paternal grandparents. So they too will be included. 

My younger sister was named for our paternal grandmother, z'l, who died in LA a week before my sister was born. We'd never met her, living on opposite coasts. Faige became Faye. Faye chose instead Tzipora/bird for a Hebrew name at the suggestion of a friend.
Ah, maybe Faye's middle "A" name is for Pearl's brother, Avram because he was probably already deceased or for Grandma Ethel's husband Abe who lied in 1947 (soon after I was born).

My older sister Arielle, was given a full English name based on her birth father's uncle who was generous to the birth mother, my mom. OY, I would never have done that name to anyone! (Yes, judgement call.) Arielle was given a new name at chuppah.

Doris Pearl Cohen Brody was to be named Pearl but a cousin Dena, her father's first cousin, died while Rose was pregnant thus, Doris Pearl Cohen Brody was also given a middle name for her great grandmother, Pearl Balmazie/Bell

Uncle Israel Mossman is named for his maternal grandfather, Israel. Died 2018
Uncle Israel and Eva moved into assisted living apartment May 2017.

Larry Hample's middle name Michael, was to honor Uncle Max.

Scott Hample's first name Arnold honors Grandpa Abe Mossman, who died in 1947.

Avram ben Abraham, Scott died summer 2016, the first 'first cousin' to die (from illness while in hospital).

Richard Hample died in car accident and was buried in GA. 2017

Allen Cohen writes: I was named for my paternal grandfather Abner Cohen (Milton's father).

Paul Kleinwald, and Paul Bell, z"l, probably are named after someone with a P name, maybe Perle Lander Bell.

Born 2012, Aviva and Brett's first baby girl is Maya Sage / Maya Nechama Sivan, named for Aviva's father, Marcel/Menachem, and for Brett's ancestors.
Naming was held at Ohr Kodesh, Silver Spring, Maryland and also in Swampscott, MA.

Born 2016, Aviva and Brett's second baby girl is Eliana Jade / Eliana Yarden Gavriela, named for Aviva's beloved maternal great grandma Ethel Bell Mossman, and for her maternal grandfather Joseph / Yosef Melton. Gavriela is for a paternal great uncle.
Simcha Bat Naming was held at Ohr Kodesh, Silver Spring, Maryland.
