~ my beloved aunt Edith Hample

With great sorrow in my heart, I share the sad news that my beloved maternal aunt, Edit (Essie) bat Avram v'Etel died today following hospitalization last week.  Edith gave her soul back to The Compassionate One. She was a bat Kohen.  May her memory be for a blessing.

I loved my 81year old aunt.  I will miss the love in the birthday cards she sent to me every year, even when she entered a senior facility and then nursing home.  I'll miss our weekly phone calls where I would hear about her grandchildren. 

I am grateful that I got to speak today, as I did yesterday, to my beloved Aunt Edith, just before her heart could not struggle any longer, and her breathing was too labored. Aunt Edith battled too many serious illnesses.  I told Aunt Edith how much I love her. I know she was listening. Although "asleep" she tried to respond. All her nieces, and nephews and cousins love Edith. One cousin, Allen, just got a note from Edith that she wrote only two days before she had a heart attack one week ago, offering compassion to him because he just broke his hip and she told him to listen to the docs. He's a doc.

Today I told Edith that her truly beloved dear mother Ethel, father Avram, and two of her sisters, Libby and Pauline z'l, all of blessed memory, are waiting for her in the light on the other side. Her husband, Alvin, z'l is also waiting for her. 

A totally dedicated sister, Perle, has been by her side.  The brother, my dear Uncle Israel (Israel ben Etel), spent last week in the hospital with heart problems.

Edith is the mother of sons, Scott and Larry (Sharon), and grandmother to Richard, and twins, Jacob and Erica.

Edith's rabbi came to visit with her yesterday.

We always had a good time together. They enjoyed life and family. In Atlanta, Edith and Alvin offered me my first boiled peanuts as we drove through a covered bridge to Stone Mountain. I vacationed there as a child and always came back with a southern accent. In LA with my sister Faye, we would push Edith and Alvin in wheelchairs through the Getty Museum and wherever they wanted to visit.

They loved visiting with their Uncle Joe, z'l, (Grandma Ethel's baby brother) and Mildred Bell, z'l, in Rolling Hills Estates, CA. The view looked over the Pacific Ocean and the Queen Mary ship. I would pick them up there and tour them. They loved touring.

Aunt Edith and her younger sisters--twins (Perle and Pauline, z'l), would bring to Rev. Martin Luther King, the special foods (including moon pies) that he loved, whenever for any minor infraction he was jailed in Decatur, Atlanta, near my grandma's little grocery store. Grandma was threatened by the KKK with "tar and feathering" because of her compassion for the Black race, called by a slang name.

Today is 9 Adar. My mom's, z'l, yahrzeit from 1969, 40 years ago, is 5 Adar, and Grandma's yahrzeit from 1988 is 13 Adar. Her other daughter, Pauline's yahrzeit is from 1986. I think it is meaningful that these three women died in Adar.

Somehow "joy increasing in Adar" is an issue for me.

The joy is that the family, first generation Americans, are together on the 'other side'.

I'm glad that on this side, my daughter took a photo of the family together in Aunt Edith's home (as we all looked weary arriving from the coastal plane trip) when we went for Edith's grandchildren's b'nai mitzvah.

Aunt Edith expressed pleasure to me that I had followed in her footsteps in getting an MBA. She had worked for the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, and she loved it when I'd visit her there at work. 

Wheelchair in tow, visiting nieces to Atlanta (Libby and Naomi) took Aunt Edith to see Slumdog Millionaire at the movies just two weeks ago.

Aunt Edith can leave here the wheelchair she did not care for, and just enjoy her big cozy recliner chair in heaven.

May she rest in peace.

O, G*d, full of compassion, Thou who dwellest on high, grant perfect rest beneath the shelter of Thy Divine Presence among the holy and pure who shine as the brightness of the firmament to the soul of my beloved aunt Edith, Edit (Essie) bat Avram v'Etel, who has gone to her eternal home.

Mayest Thou, O G*d of Mercy, shelter Aunt Edith forever under the wings of Thy Presence.

 May Edith's soul be bound up in the bond of life eternal, and grant that the memories of  Edith's life inspire me always to noble and consecrated living. Amayn.

Obituary

Edith Mossman Hample, 81, died on Thursday, March 5, 2009. A lifelong resident of Atlanta, Edith was married to the late Alvin E. Hample for 51 years. She retired from the US Public Health Service in 1993 after serving 46 years. She also earned a bachelor's degree from UGA and a master's from Univ. of Utah. 

She is survived by her son Scott Hample (Baltimore, MD), son Larry Hample and daughter-in-law Dr. Sharon Lehman (Atlanta), three grandchildren Richard Hample (Savannah, GA), Erica and Jacob Hample (Atlanta), sister Perle Mossman (Albuquerque, NM) and brother and sister-in law Israel & Eva Mossman (Federalsburg, MD) and many nieces and nephews. 

Graveside services will be held on Sunday, March 8 at 12 noon at Crest Lawn Cemetery with Rabbi Barry Coffsky officiating. Sign online guestbook: www.edressler.com. My twins Jacob & Erica had their B’nei Mitzvah at The Temple, the Atlanta synagogue that was bombed (when I was a child) after it was the only (large enough) local house of worship that would host a reception for Rev.
